Alternative Energy
JEA is embracing a brighter energy future. From solar to biomass and methane gas, JEA is diversifying our electric generation to include a variety of renewable energy sources. For more details on the mix delivered to our customers, please see our Energy Mix..
Solar Power
JEA took its first step toward clean energy in 1990 with the installation of solar panel arrays at local schools, businesses, and Jacksonville International Airport. Since then, we’ve continued to expand our solar footprint by adding more solar power to our fuel mix and offering a variety of solar energy options for residential customers, local businesses, and the community as a whole.
Methane Gas
Through a power purchase agreement with Landfill Energy Systems (LES), JEA receives 15 MW of energy from landfill gas-to-energy facilities. Trail Ridge is one of the largest landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the Southeast, providing enough renewable
energy to supply electricity to approximately 4,550 homes. JEA currently makes all of the environmental attributes (Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs) from this facility available to sell in order to lower rates for our customers.
Biomass
Biomass is organic material made from plants and trees. It’s considered a renewable energy source, because we can grow more trees and crops, and waste from these organic materials will always exist. Some examples of biomass fuels are tree cuttings, wood,
crops, manure and some garbage. When burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat. JEA has been utilizing biomass for generating electricity at its Northside Generating Station (NGS) since 2021 and is working on projects to increase
biomass utilization for power generation at NGS.
