What is the water meter change-out and why do I need it?

Beginning in June 2023, JEA is upgrading its water meter technology to provide all water customers with more information about the water they use and improve service. The state-of-the-art AMI technology will replace an obsolete radio system to ensure JEA can continue to receive customers’ consumption data.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of the new AMI metering technology are numerous.

  • You’ll be able to monitor your water consumption, which can make an impact on your monthly water bill.
  • Through this remote technology, readings can be done more quickly and efficiently, eliminating manual readings in some neighborhoods.
  • We can identify water leaks early.

How many JEA customers will be impacted by this change?

JEA will be upgrading all of its 420,000 water meters across its service territory for residential and commercial customers.

How long is this process going to take?

We anticipate that it will take four years to complete the change-out process across our entire service territory. For each individual household, the process should take only 30 minutes for the installation.

Will this save me money on my monthly water bill?

Because the new metering technology allows you to monitor your daily water consumption, the power to save on your monthly water bill is in your hands. Through responsible monitoring and modification of your water usage, you may have the opportunity to save on your monthly bill. The technology alone won’t cause the savings, but customer behavior may.

Do I have to participate in this process?

All JEA water customers will be included in this change-out process. But at no additional cost to you, and with considerable benefits, we hope you will recognize the advantages this new technology will offer you.

How long will the change out take, and will I be without water service?

The installation process should take approximately 30 minutes. During this time the technician may need to briefly disconnect your water service. You will be notified at the time of arrival, so you can be prepared for the interruption should it be necessary.

How will I know when you are going to being making this change for my household?

Within two weeks of the installation, you will receive a postcard in the mail and an email with reminders about the upgrade and what to expect. We're sorry, but we cannot schedule individual appointments.

Do I need to be present during the installation process?

No, it is not necessary for you to be present during the change-out process. We simply ask that your pets are secure, and the water meter is accessible. The technician will knock on your door upon arrival in the event your water must be turned off temporarily.

If I’m not home at the time, how will I know the installation has been completed?

When the change out is completed, the technician will leave a door hanger informing you that the job is done. Should there be a problem, additional information regarding next steps will be indicated.

Is JEA doing these installations itself?

JEA is using a company called Envocore to install the devices. All technicians will drive a marked truck and will wear an Envocore shirt.
